How do Jews look?

My Jewish Learning was created to compete with Aish and Chabad – I know its crazy but I actually like the site. This video is quite interesting, although they should have dug up some more diverse people. 2 frummies, one hot chick and a couple of left wing cantoral students is definitely not representative of the Jewish community, but I understand, because every time I whip out the camera in the orthodox community, people scatter because they know they will be put right on you tube.

  1. They found some hippies and musicians to redefine what “Jews” look like. Nothing Jewish about wearing immodest clothing, women singing in fron of men, or not wearing kippah / tzitzis.

The site isn’t anything like Chabad , maybe a bit more like Aish but leaning towards M.O / Conservative.

  2. Web site seems like they are endorsing gays to some extent, although discreetly. I’ll retract and sya they aren’t anywhere near Chabad or Aish either.

  3. Phil:

    1) The definition of “immodest” is subjective.
    2) Some opinions say that a microphone constitutes an appropriate barrier masking a woman’s voice and allow her to sing into it in front of men.
    3) Kippah is a minhag, not a halacha.
    4) I just read through all of the articles on homosexuality posted on MyJewishLearning. Surprisingly, they seem very objective. Yes. they quote Reform (not Reformed) rabbis, but they also quote Conservative, Orthodox, and Reconstructionist rabbis. The point is to give an overview of Judaism’s response to homosexuality, and whether you like it or not, Judaism is not solely comprised of Orthodoxy.

    1. Judaism has a very clear standard and it is known as the Torah. The Torah very clearly states that G-d despises homosexuality.

Reform, Conservative and any form of Judaism that does not accept all the laws of the Torah are aberrations of or corrupted forms of Judaism.

That is not to say we should not love the Jewish People themselves who practice these versions of Judaism. They do not know better.

One day, I hope they will learn to understand the greatness of following the Torah. Shabbos and Torah are the greatest gifts G-d has given to us.

  4. Gila,

I know it won’t matter what I say but here goes:

    1) Tznius is subjective only in terms of going beyond the minimal standards in Shulchan Oruch. Skirts up to the knees, shirts that cover up to elbows and collarbone and loose fitting clothes are clear standards accepted by all (frum) authorities. An example of something subjective is tights. Some authorities permit clear ones and some permit wearing none at all. Those are legitimate differences in standards.

2)Those opinions about the mic have basically been rejected by all mainstream poskim pretty much regardless of affiliation. If the mic actually distorted the voice then no one would use it to amplify.

    3) Yarmulke was minhag maybe 1000 years ago. Ask any (again, frum) rav and he will tell you it is halacha for all men today. Without exception. It’s gone way past minhag yisroel torah he.

    1. The retarded term “jew fro” is so self hating only obama jew boys and girls use such an obnoxious term.since curly hair in Europeans is very very common why is some jews with curly hair are misleadingly singled out for a demeaning label. How about irish catholic fro or Italian fro or Albanian fro or German fro.One of the most well know celebrities with a “jew fro” was the painter bob Ross, only on problem he was a wasp European not jewish.I can accept idiotic sterotypes from the dumb goyim but when jews sling them I am sickened to my core.

  5. Gila,

    1) The definition of tznius is halachic, not subjective. She wasn’t dressing to tznius at her concerts, nor id singing in front of men with a mic. acceptable.

    2) Judaism IS constituted by rabbis that follow the Torah. Back in talmudic times, idiots like reformers, atheist and the like weren’t considered Jews for most purposes. I’m referring to people like the tzidukim, minim, apikorsim, etc.

Frum Jews follow the Shuchan Aruch. There is no way you or anyone else is going to convice us that so called rabbis that perform interfaith marriages and are “mechalev shabbat befarhesia” have any say whatsoever bout Judaism.

In fact, we are forbidden from going into their temples, much less praying in them. These individuals and their congregants are a disgrace to Hashem and the Jewish religion. In biblical times, they would have been put to death.

  6. I didn’t see myself in there at all! Why must the tall Jews sit in the back row (almost hiding) at all the important times like group photographs!

  7. Chosid,
1,000 years ago? No, not really. The kippah came into it some time between WW II and now.

However, that girl was for sure not dressed tznius. Not covering your shoulders is something I wouldn’t have even done before I was converting. She even said she likes to be sexy, the mediterranean is sexy.

  8. I wouldn’t go around in uncovered shoulders either, but as I said, it’s subjective and depends upon the standard of the community in which you live. I would never walk into Bnei Brak wearing jeans, but where I live in Kfar Saba, it’s perfectly acceptable. R’ Yehuda Henkin wrote, in his book Understanding Tzniut: Modern Controversies in the Jewish Community, “Where women walk around in halter tops or less, a short sleeved blouse is minimally provocative and when pornography is rampant, viewing a woman’s face is not titillating.”

  9. How do Jews look?

With their eyes, of course! 🙂

1,000 years ago? No, not really. The kippah came into it some time between WW II and now.

Didn’t the pope wear his kippah before WWII?

  10. heshy, i’ve been using jew-ish since i started at rochester to describe the jewish population there. the secret is that when you say it you have to rotate your hand with all fingers spread…jewISH.

  11. I look Jew-ish.

I am an auburn-haired, blue-eyed. fair skinned woman.

I suspect that even my cousin, whose ancestors fled Iraq through Singapore and somehow ended up with nice, almond eyes, looks Jew-ish as well.

I don’t think it matters how I dress as I still look Jew-ish when I am bathing.

My sister has a class picture from my 10th year. She just sent it to me. There is David in back of me – Jew-fro and all. Lisa in front, blond hair, blue-green eyes, and Stacy, curly hair with brown eyes. Then there is me – petite like my Nana and with her same high cheek bones. We all look different but there is some similarity.

I’ll have to agree with Mark. Jews look with their eyes.

  12. “… [Ladino] culture was born out of the Mediterranean, where it’s, y’know, hot and steamy….”

Last time I heard, the Mediterranean was hot and dry in the summer and cool and wet in the winter, Perhaps, Sarah, you’re confusing it with Cuba?

“…[Jewish culture]…it’s not all in shetls.”

I guess this means Mann and Nadel will be getting their pink slips soon, so as not to misdirect the public?

P.S.: Elasticky doesn’t breath. Prob’ly not good for the Mediterranean OR a hot and steamy climate.

  13. I like the guy who says: “Eh, I always wondered why it says ‘in the image of G-d’, not ‘from G-d’. It’s all about the image, dude!..” Because anyone can comment on Chumash, right?

  14. iam jewess … iam looking like : dark blue eyes, dark brown hair,my face is typical like we have got… people always look of me because iam very different like they 🙂

    1. “I am a jewess” you sound like a nazi describing death camp jewish women.Who uses that term other than anti Semites and self hating obama Jews anyway??
