Jewish Synagogue ettiquette learned from watching Seinfeld

Thanks to Elinor for sending me this one – no idea how she found it – but it’s hilarious!

    1. I’ve met people who didn’t like Seinfeld. People who loved it (and I do). But I’ve never met someone who got “pissed off” from it. What in the world drives you that nuts?

      1. Having to explain to people from all over the US that I work with that he is a comedian, and most of the crap in the show has nothing at all to do with being Jewish.. Over and Over again…. At least (mostly) they realise that South Park has no idea what they are talking about when it comes to Judaism. Plus, “happy Festivus!”.. That, and his shtick is just annoying as crap.

  1. I’m wondering if she’s an actress, and that was a little spoof she was doing. Although, basically, except for the “Boil,” kissing the hand, and taking off the shoes, she pretty much had everything else right!

      1. Let’s see, she said that the Rabbi is the highest person. . .well, that’s pretty much accurate in a shul. She said that Shalom means peace. She got that right (if incomplete). She said that if you eat any food it had to be kosher, which she knew meant that it had to have a “U in a circle” or a “star”. Also incomplete but correct. She even got what the “Boil” does correct. So, she was one letter off. Boil, moil, what’s a letter between friends?

      2. Well, she said that the rabbi is the “highest person,” and that’s pretty accurate in a shul. She said that shalom means peace, and that’s correct (if incomplete). She said that the food would have to be kosher which meant it would have a U in a circle or a star, also basically correct, despite being very incomplete. She even knew the job of the “boil,” and was only off by a letter. Boil, moil–what’s a letter between friends?

  2. The Rabbi is the H.N.I.C. and the “boil” is gonna circumcise the baby, and Festivus is our big holiday. If you eat food, it’s kosher.. Make sure to take off your shoes, and kiss the H.N.I.C.’s hand. Black people are exempt from wearing black, so they’re ok there… yup… I think she’s got everything…

    1. She corrected herself on Festivus. HNIC is a figure of speech meaning the person in charge, so that is right. Any food you eat in a shul had better be kosher, so that was right too. I suspect the hand kissing and shoe taking off was intentional humor just like the black people exempt from wearing black bit clearly was. My suspicion is that “Boil” was also a joke. Remember the web site? Frum SATIRE?

  3. Hysterical. Where’s it from.

Favorite bit: “should’ve worn black” “we are black”.

    Can’t go wrong with that.

  4. There is a machloket in my shul as to who the highest person is: the Rabbi, the Cantor who got himself smicha on-line, or the President who has certification of Judaism from a Bet Din. Some might re-define highest and give the title to an eccentric congregant who shows up for Kabbalat shabbat respecting the driving prohibition by making himself unfit to drive.

Our chesed committee should agree to serve as regional host for a Food Pantry Drive and invite her to come along. She and our clergy can work out with each other who is the Mashgiach and who is the Moshiach.

      1. Shema Yisroael Torah Network (orthodox) or The American Seminary for Contemporary Judaism (conservative, but orthodox students are allowed to take an exam at an affiliated orthodox yeshiva)

  5. I think it’s funny that she refers to it as a “Jewish Synagogue”…what other type of synagogue is there? (All right, JfJ have “synagogues,” as well). But I still think it’s funny, the same way that many people in the South refer to a “Jewish Rabbi”

  6. I about died with laughter when she called the Rabbi a “H.N.I.C” (Head N. In Charge). Doubt he had ever been called that before!

  7. I think it was satire, but it was absolutely hilarious. The best satire is ALWAYS awesome because it leaves some folks guessing if it was real or not …. :^)

  8. Well, if she was actually a comedienne, I guess it’s OK, or at least Triangle K. But I thought the driver did a better job as straight man.

    1. LOL, the driver did an awesome job as a straight man. :^) He actually kind of reminded me of my own dear partner when I’m going off on some crazy tangent. ;^D

  9. SO awesome. There’s no way that was faked, and the husband is not a straight-man. He’s a husband who finally realized what he got himself into and can just barely tolerate this woman who’s about 30 points beneath his IQ level. Who doesn’t know people like this?
If he was Jewish 30 years ago, he’d develop a drinking problem like some of our grandparents.
As it is, he’ll probably just get a little action from his younger secretary, then get a messy divorce from this airhead who’ll cry and take half his stuff, and THEN develop the drinking problem.
