In order to keep the morals of society from spinning downward like the rest of the world, many ultra orthodox groups in Israel ban women from driving. Women simply drive like maniacs according to most Rabbis and driving like a maniac gives them undue attention, regardless of whether that attention is angry middle fingers pointed at these women while they try and navigate the treacherous streets of Mea Shearim, it is attention and we don’t think women should have any attention – we do allow attention to the by-products of women – mainly food and children.
Morals have been high, gay parade attanedance is down and that is directly related to the ban on women driving, but we have an issue. We have heard the disturbing news that girls have been go-karting, which is in fact more immoral than driving – mostly because it is fun and the lower position on the seat combined with an open air cocpit make for a very pritzusdike situation. This is without taking into factor that the go-karting is still coed – which is unacceptable.
I would just like to take the time to announce that we have heard of another kiddush Hashem being made in Emmanual by a Rabbi who undertook the humble prospect of making sure girls were not seen publicly driving go-karts. He heard of a group of girls who would be trying this new form of fun out to rebel against their families and damage their shidduch market value. He stormed the course risking life and limb and tore the girls out of the karts and then damaged them so no one could violate the laws of tznius again.
Hat Tip – Yitz

Well, and in case we want to introduce the veil or the burqa that does not leave a big enough vision field to drive, it is wise to start out by banning women from driving right now… So it won’t be too much at the same time.
I mean: in france, a Woman wearing a veil while driving got a ticket. This could never have happened in Saudi arabia…
If a woman were driving ~at all~ in Saudi Arabia she would probably get a lot worse than a ticket. :^O (Unless it was a Bedouin woman driving out in the desert.)
Checked out Y-Love’s page. The vid on the about tab is excellent. And I can’t believe he’s from Baltimore. That is serious street. If you make it to High School, I think you get shot.
Orthodox Judaism has displayed such a bizarre shift to the extreme right over the last few years that it has made former centrists like myself want to do nothing but disassociate myself with the community.
Has there been any good news to come out of Orthodox Judaism in the last ten years? Or is it only that the media focuses on the evil and the extreme?
Monsey chicken kashrut scandals, adulterous conversion rabbis (Tropper), molestation cover-ups (Kolko), buffoonery on the gay-marriage issue (OU) , public degradation of women, Rubashkin, Ponzi schemes, Eli Weinstein, the Emannuel school scandal, daily Brooklyn mortgage fraud, haredi riots over shabbat, graves and everything else they riot over, Indian shaytels, lack of proper education in the financially failing yeshiva system, charitable donation money laundering (Spinka) good kids getting thrown out of yeshivas for ridiculous ‘infractions’, Section 8 cons, the exile of Slifkin after so much rabbinic approbation, all done under the cloak of black pants, a white shirt and a black hat. Is this what we have Torah for? Does it ever end? Does it ever get better?
Is the present day Orthodox lifestyle anywhere close to the embodiment of of Torah values? Would Torah communities from the 1800s recognize us today?
You forgot the courageous way they defend their communities from mesirah by protecting child molesters and destroying the lives of the victims who come forward.
To be fair, I hardly think Jewish Orthodoxy had the market on mortgage fraud cornered in the past few years.
Or covering up child molestation… But I expect more from my own people..
Banks are much more careful who they lend money to nowadays. A person has to have legitimate paychecks in order to purchase a house. Cash won’t do.
Before, all a person needed was good credit.
;^D For a little while there I don’t think they even needed that! Just a pulse and a signature on the dotted line and here are the keys to your new McMansion ….
Was he screaming “go home and make me a sammich!” in Yiddish while doing it?
This is totally insane; until I clicked on the link I thought the bit about the crazed Rabbi pulling little girls out of go-karts was surely satire! :^O
Sadly, this one is a real story…
Actually, this is a bit of a sign of sanity – the comments on VIN almost uniformly think he was wrong. I clicked the link steeling myself to see a bunch of supportive comments.
Steel yourself. Laws are laws, kal va-chomer Hashem’s laws, and as such they need enforcers. Whoever this rabbi was, he had to be a Pinchas in this case because weak-minded people in his community, probably from the same population that tried to water down the school, gave themselves license to let things get that way.
I’m on the fence about this one.
On the one hand, I dont support discrimination.
On the other hand, have you seen the way frum women drive?
Come to Central Avenue in Cedarhurst on a Friday afternoon.
But really, in Israel, EVERYONE drives like that.
In cedarhurst its not only the driving but more the parking that drives me insane!!Just because your lousy good for nothing rich husband bought you a (insert oversized overpriced SUV here) even tho you can barely get out of your own driveway without hitting a tree, you still do not have the right to double or triple park right in middle of the street blocking every1 else (including city buses i might add) just cuz you NEED TO run in and pick your candy at oh nuts!
Add both the devout Jews and Muslims who drive in Golders Green. Terrible drivers all…. I am always amazed there are not smashed cars when I drive here. Well, more smashed cars.
The 9 Miles of Burning Crazy is strong in this one.
If two people can commit intimate impropriety while driving separate go karts they need to ditch seminary/yeshiva. They’ve got lucrative careers as circus acrobats.
Or frum porn ….
