I decided to seek advice on whether burning cd’s is cool or not. I have been told numerous different things- but I figured you people would put your two cents in.
Also I am having an issue with wireless internet. Can you use someone elses wireless network without them knowing?

I think that a person needs to get permission for using someone elses wireless internet connection. I also feel it is against halacha to burn CDS as well in certain circumstances. The only places where I feel it is OK to burn CDS is if you are making a personal mix or you want to keep a CD in the house as well as in the car or any other circumstance which it is for personal and you are not taking money away from someone. Because of other people using my wireless connection, my internet speed is slowing down and overheating my modem. Therefore without permission it is stealing.
Wireless internet schnorring is no doubt against halacha. Everytime you use someone elses broadband connection you are slowing it down for everyone else. Imagine you’re giving someone a piggyback ride and everythings goin fine. The person riding you is diggin it cuz he gets a free ride. Piggyback rides are a blast! ya know what I mean?! and the person whos got the person on his back doesnt mind because if its just one person riding you back then it feels kinda nice having flesh against you. Besides it only one person so its all good, you can ride them along at a steady pace……things are nice! My Mashal continues…..then another person hops aboard! what do you think happens then???????
Thats right, it put more of a strain on your back then you start riding slower :-(. It doesnt feel so nice for the person giving the ride and the original dude who jumped on the guys back in the first place is like “Dude!!!! What the fuck???? Stop ridin this guys back!!! Hes goin mad slow now because of you!!!! GET THE FUCK OFF!!!!!”

Here’s a good article on music copying. The problem with this article is that the whole medium of media content is changing these days with the mainstream rush of MP3s and DRM. But intellectual property has always been a very grey area in regards to halacha.
I think its one of those basic things that everyone knows is stealing but ignore. Kind of like paying for one movie and going to ten, or using a student metro card for NYC subways when you are clearly not a student. I happen to pay for wireless internet by going to a coffee shop and using theirs- but I know folks who sit in their cars on some side street just to pick up a signal- thats plain wrong. But people like to concentrate on image – rather then real halachic issues- and thats the problem with so called “frumkeit” these days.

Yes, if they know how to check their router, they can see if someone else is using their connection. But if they knew how to do that, they would have it secured in the first place.

I agree with Hesh, leaving something without security does not warrant stealing- you can bring up a million cases where someone could have put a password- like for instance a credit card account online- or something of the sort.

Yes but bandwidth can be missed as well, especially if you need to be uploading or downloading things.
If I’m just browsing websites on your network then the bandwidth you use is negligible. If I’m downloading on your network, then fine, you could say I’m stealing, especially if you have a limited amount of downloads per month. But not if I’m just reading websites.
