It’s a classic statement, but after so many messages statements expressing shock at the fact that I’m still religious after seeing and being exposed to all the shit that flows in and around the frum Jewish community, I have decided to add my two cents on this important subject.
Contrary to what my critics think, I don’t hate anyone, my good friends and intelligent fans see the love and affection that sneaks through in most of my writing. Many frum Jews can’t handle the truth, they definitely shouldn’t be reading my stuff if that’s the case, I do a service, I expose our own stupidity and try to make people laugh in the process. Yes it makes frum Jews look bad, but am I responsible for their stupidity – if we don’t laugh at ourselves and expose our problems in the process will we ever change?
It’s understandable that not everyone agrees and we can agree to disagree, but to say that I make frum Jews look bad is kind of foolish. Don’t frum Jews make themselves look bad, I rarely talk about the scandals that are coming out in main stream media on a daily basis. If you want to see how little I write about the scandals and illegal stuff that goes on just check out the weekly frum crime blotter on Heeb. I myself like to make fun of the subtleties of leading a Jewish life and yes, I hope to either make you laugh, make you mad or both.

I think you make frum jews look good, by showing that we don’t take ourselves too seriously and we can laugh at ourselves (well some of us anyway.)
Exactly.
If I couldn’t laugh, sometimes, I’d cry. Thank you for being real.
Well, yeah 🙂
How did you get that drawing?
I had an artist make it for me – telling her I could get her attention and it turns out she got some of her first jobs out of it
Bravo, Heshy! Don’t let small minds get you down!
I second s(b.), keep it real <3
A favorite line heard a long time ago:
“If I weren’t Jewish, I’d be an anti-semite.”
🙁
“Yes it makes frum Jews look bad, but am I responsible for their stupidity – if we don’t laugh at ourselves and expose our problems in the process will we ever change?”
I think you hit it on the head with these statements. Bloggers and other reporters aren’t responsible for the stupidity, but rather for its publicizing.
If people wanna ask if people like you should be publicizing the stupidity, than that’s different. People can call it loshon horah all they want, but how is a frumsatire blog post different than a mussar-induced drash by a rabbi (besides the delivery)? Both offer a perspective of what has become of us Jews and challenge us to determine whether or not we should keep to our ways, or change the way we act or how we view things. Sure a drash offers more of a solution to evil ways – that being the goal of the drash, whereas I don’t believe Heshy truly has a motive that he can inspire change with every blog post… I think he’d prefer if we just had a laugh. And really… where is the harm in that?
That people react with such stubborn seriousness is precisely the kind of absurdity that bloggers like Heshy are trying to shed light on.
Why can’t critics ever visit posts like these?
I am sure they do.. and then move along, letting it fall right out of their brain…
They don’t have an answer to it, so they ignore it
Amen to this post!
God and the Torah are perfect, people are not.
The real world cannot exist in the presence of unalloyed perfection. That’s why some Kabbalists say the original ‘vessels’ of Divine power had to be broken and remade.
Just out of curiosity – because I do not disagree – but when you say, “God … [is] perfect,” what exactly do you mean?
He has desires as outlined in the Torah therefore the G-d of the Torah cannot be perfect as desire indicates lack.
As a gentile (for now), reading your blog only makes me look more positively on the frum community. You’ve helped me realize that you can be Orthodox and still a totally normal person.
Love this. Of course, “a totally normal person” would never what to become an Orthodox Jew, but I get what you mean.

OK, I give up. This was supposed to be a reply to Goy, correcting a spelling mistake. Hesh, any way to correct/delete a comment?
u really need to get a life or better yet get laid ur prob some bum off the street trying to make ur self feel better about yourself!
Bums off the street usually don;t have 70,000 people reading their blogs, wait – do bums even have blogs. Not all people in the streets are bums for that matter and you sound like a moron.
Gotta love a troll who’s got nothing constructive to say and just keeps spewing bile instead…oh, wait, get the f*** outta here!
Things that make me not want to become frum:
1) Goy bashing among frummies
2) Gay bashing among frummies
3) Dog bashing among frummies
4) My own spiritual confusion
Things that make me want to become frum:
1) This blog
2) Guilt
3) A few other chill, funny, intelligent, sane frummies I know or know of
4-99) This blog
Hesh, your blog is practically a kiruv organization unto itself. It’s certainly encourged me.
The goys can take care of themselves.
The gays will eventually have what we now take for granted. And any Jew who parrots anti-gay rhetoric and supports gay-hating legislation probably does make his matzoh with the blood of Christian babies.
The dog-hating is inexcusable.
Jews are the product of Judiasm, so blame Judiasm
