Chabad propaganda machine? Oh Heshy, you give us far too much credit.
The Chabad propaganda machine is huge. All those damn posters and buses with the rebbe. He’s still dead and not moshiach, no matter how many times I see his face.
That stuff is not official Chabad propaganda by any stretch; The only official channel that i know of is probably Chabad.org .
It’s Chabad propaganda regardless.
I don’t know what is and isn’t “official” and it really doesn’t matter.
I guess you can see it that way. I understand the word “Propaganda” to mean a unified message emanating from some centralized and goal oriented organization; you may see it differently.
propaganda has taken on many forms throughout history. It doesn’t always come from a centralized location or from an easily defined organization.
On the contrary, i think it does. Propaganda in modern times may be designed to look unofficial and disorganized but it usually comes from a motivated central party with a defined mission statement, at least in the way I’ve come to understand the word.
Alter-Cocker,
Don’t you think that, practically speaking, propaganda can come only from those in power? I think that there have been many instances, both historical and modern, where the opposition wishing to speak truth to power cannot form an organization strong enough to conduct a propaganda campaign. Guerrilla bands may evade those in power but they cannot control media. I am not sure whether their messages can be classified as propaganda.
Wikipedia on propaganda:
…description by Richard Alan Nelson: “Propaganda is neutrally defined as a systematic form of purposeful persuasion that attempts to influence the emotions, attitudes, opinions, and actions of specified target audiences for ideological, political or commercial purposes through the controlled transmission of one-sided messages (which may or may not be factual) via mass and direct media channels. A propaganda organization employs propagandists who engage in propagandism—the applied creation and distribution of such forms of persuasion.”[5]
I am an opponent of certain commercial and political powers that be in the U.S. My frustrations with media have led me to conclude that anyone attempting to oppose entrenched political, ideological, or commercial powers cannot sufficiently command the attention of media to engage in an effective propaganda program in this day and age, at least that seems to be the case in the US. Maybe that is not true for mass-churches, or for Chabad. What do you think?
Chussy
Look, I don’t know the names of the people responsible for the stuff all over Israel, but it is Chabad propaganda.
In Jerusalem I saw chabadnicks putting tefilin on a Catholic priest…
Santa has the last laugh – he’s left handed and they put the tefillin on the wrong arm
The guy on the mitzvahmobile always used to ask me if my mother was Jewish before offering me tfillin or a lulav. And then they would ask for a gift made of paper. They preferred Abe Lincoln to George Washington because he had a beard, wore a big black hat and was shot in the temple. Putting tfillin on Santa seems naughty so they can expect a gift made from metal instead of paper.
