Biggest BS shidduch story of all time

Many years ago, when I used to shidduch date I remember hearing the same story over and over again to teach me about the strange world of shidduchim. I wondered why no one ever bothered to just call it BS and rather they wanted to believe that such craziness could be remotely possible – I guess the frum community is capable of some pretty crazy things, which made the following story more believable.

The story goes as follows:

While stopped at a red light, the girl took the keys out of the ignition. The guy just looks at her and says “dude WTF are you doing?” and she says something along the lines of “you passed the test because you didn’t freak out” (if the story was real, he would more likely be in shock) to which he responds that she failed and kicks her out of his car.

Now I’m sure someone is going to tell me they heard this story from their second cousin who was in Sternberg pioneers with the girl who’s sister it happened to, but whenever I hear this story – it makes me wonder about people’s gullibility in the frum community.

    1. Wow, thanks for the corroboration, Anonymous! I totally believe an anonymous Internet confirmation of a completely ridiculous-sounding urban legend!

  1. This is true about me, although I wasn’t on a date, it was my wife who I kicked out of the car, and also, we weren’t at a red light, the car was moving.

  2. > whenever I hear this story – it makes me wonder about people’s gullibility in the frum community.

It’s an urban legend. Lots of people believe urban legends, in and out of the frum community. There are plenty of people convinced that there are alligators in NY city sewer.

Most people don’t care if it’s true. It’s just a funny story.

  3. I don’t understand: why is she “testing” him, why would she do it by placing them in a dangerous traffic situation, and what’s the point? Is the point of this to get a shidduch, rather than dealing with the mishugas out there? But then, what if you ended up being the dude married to this crazy broad?

  4. I always liked that story, and out of 3 billion dates that went on since the advent of the car , it’s not so hard to believe it happened once (even if it it never did)

  5. Once a week I get an email forwarded to me by my wife, who had it forwarded from some tehillim group and I always tell my wife do you think this is true? Well so and so forwarded it to me so it must be. And of course i cut and paste the story into google, get the snopes page and show her its fake. The last story she got was about the scam of an old lady crying for help in a Target parking lot…Bottom line people will beleive anything if it is in an email.

Oh and the way I heard this story was that after the girl gives him back the keys he throws her out because she failed his test of being normal.

  6. OK, for those of you who didn’t understand Heshy’s shorthand version of this story (I didn’t either) I found this online:

    ———————————————————————
A couple was out on a shidduch date. They stopped at a busy intersection and the young lady leaned over and pulled the keys out of the ignition. The light turned green and the bachur said to her, “Quickly, give me the keys.”

    The girl said, “No.”

The cars behind them were honking, and he got a little panicky. “Give me the keys.”

    “No.”

The cars were going crazy and the light turned red again. The girl smiled at him. “I was just testing to see if you would get angry. You really have quite a bit of self-control.”

The light turned green again, she passed the keys back, and he started driving.

“You’ve passed the test with flying colors,” the girl concluded.

He pulled up to the curb and swung her door open.

    “Well, you failed. Get out.”

  7. How about the one where a guys is driving a girl back from Manhattan to Flatbush at the end of a date and takes the bridge instead of the tunnel. The bridge is free and the tunnel costs $. But the bridge takes about 15 minutes longer. The girl spoke up and said: There are 2 reasons why a guy would take the bridge. 1) He’s cheap and doesn’t want to pay for the tunnel 2) He doesn’t care about the girl and doesn’t mind wasting her time going out of the way. The guy cracked open his window, dangled a $20 bill out of it, and as he let go and let it fly away – said “I’ll tell you 1 thing, I definitely aint cheap!!!!”

    1. What about option 3: He took the longer route because he’s enjoying her company and wants to spend more time with her before he has to drop her off and say goodbye?

      1. Just this past Shemini Atzeret, explaining the whole “one more day with God” midrash, Rabbi Mordechai Machlis told exactly that! He said that he was on a date with a girl, and that he wanted to take the shorter route between Manhattan and Flatbush. She said to take the longer route, and he said, “But it will take us twice as long!” She said, “Yes, I know, that’s why I want to take it.” Rabbi Machlis concluded, “And that’s why I married her.”

    2. The other reason is because that’s the way Google Maps directs you. I actually had a girl ask me why I’m taking the bridge (although the tunnel fee would be reason enough – never had a schidduch date even offer to pay), and my answer was because you haven’t directed me, I’m not from Brooklyn and this is how it mapped on the computer…Brooklyn people tend to be shocked that not everyone knows every road into and out of Flatbush…

  8. Love the new ads for Latinamericancupid.com running along the comments. Latinas in bikinis! Sweet. Always putting away images for the spank bank. Thanks.

  9. I’ve had a couple of situations where guys wanted to run me all over the place when I was younger. WTF is up with that? One was a guy that I was giving a ride home to him and he was like, ok get off the highway… turn here turn there and then get back on the same highway. I had a FIT. GAMMMMMMES!!!!! You won’t get anywhere with me if you piss me off.

  10. The guy just looks at her and says “dude WTF are you doing?”

Why did he call her “dude”? Was she handsome? Mannish?
Or was it 2 frum guys on a date?

    1. That one is true. But it happened more than once. In fact, once it became public, they had to start locking up the hot dogs.

  11. How about the that goes like this

Abe borrows car from friend who proposed by leaving note in passenger visor that says “Will you marry me?”

Chani (who is on first date, hence nerves) gets into car flips down visor to adjust makeup, sees note and vomits from nerves.

I heard it from my older brother who heard it from his room-mate who has a cousin in mexico who heard it from his shadchans sisters wife’s dogs groomer….

    1. I’m not sure part of that story is more unbelievable:

That the Shadchan’s sister had a wife, or that the Shadchan’s sister had a dog?

  12. The story in the main post is true. I know because it happened to me!

Well, actually it happened to my best friend. We are so close it’s as if it happened to me. I mean, it happened to his other best friend, which is like it happened to him. But I do know that the story is true..
