Oh my gosh, those were just too true-to-life. The best satire invariably is.
First, regarding Matisyahu … I love Matisyahu, but I honestly think I could not pick him out of a lineup of people in similar dress. Yes, I know, that’s terrible.
If I had more exposure to Chasidic Jews, then I’m sure I’d quickly learn to pick out individual features, but as it stands, these folks look so out-of-the-ordinary to me that the first thing I see is WHOA! KIPPA! PEYOS! RABBI BEARD! BLACK OUTFIT! — and it’d take awhile for me to digest anything but those factors.
(Please keep in mind that I am not an ignorant person who purposely avoids exposure to Chasidic Jews — I just live in Eugene, Oregon. It’s not exactly Monsey.)
Okay, the second video. That also hit really close to home.
You know, I moved to Oregon from Southern California six years ago, and I got up here by hiking and hitch-hiking up the coast.
Thus I camped at nearly every campground up the Pacific coast … and in all that time, I only saw ONE black hiker. It was at Julia Pfeifer Big Sur and yes, I must admit that I did gawk a bit. ;^D
