How many text messages do you send per month?

I was talking to someone a while back when the topic of text messaging came up, I just recently added 200 text messages to my phone bill for $5, because prior to this people thought I was reciving their messages and I wasn’t. He told me that he sent and received 14,000 text messages last month! My immediate reaction was, how is this possible? My secondary reaction was that based on the amount of time it took me to send one simple message, 14,000 of them would take all month to produce.

Well I guess I am behind the times, because if you thought cell phones made getting in touch with your friends easy and impersonal, text messages have made a conversation via cell phone personal again. I remember when it was so hard to reach people, I didn’t have a cell phone for 3 years after it seemed like everyone had one so people valued my time, and when I finally bought one – I kept it off most of the time.

Now text messaging has created this whole new culture, kind of what twitter has done to blogging. Its quick its easy and apparently if your not on my crappy plan, included in your contract free. I am sure it has changed the way shidduch dates are organized as well. Now you can probably text a girl instead of calling her, making it that less painful and easier to accept or reject a girl.

I recently looked at my fathers cell phone and found over 1000 unread text messages, many of importance that he has no idea how to look at.

  1. i have 2500 texts included on my plan, but i have a BlackBerry, so i get my emails and can use BlackBerry Messenger (awesome invention) so i dont text that much.

while dating my husband we texted a lot – its quicker than emailing or phoning, you can text while in the middle of a meeting or something without interrupting the speaker….

  2. I also have a blackberry so I don’t need that many sms text messages. I send maybe 100 of those to people that don’t have email or a messenger on their phone. I send about 750 emails a month from my phone, and I use BBM and gtalk quite a bit.

  3. Ask my 15 year old sister. She needs to clear out her phone’s memory AND inbox daily or else it fills up and she can’t get any more. i send *maybe* 3 in 2 months’ time. i’ll get approximately the same, and only from my sister, and rarely from my brother in Israel. Also, add to that the 2-3 spam texts i get a month. Even better, now that i switched from my LG VX-8300 pphone to my new Samsung Sway(it’s cool, but i prefer the LG instead), i can’t find out who the message is from before opening it, to see if it’s spam. If i don’t open it, i don’t get charged, thankfully, on my Verizon plan. Maybe if i could print my messages on my Kosher Shabbat Toilet Paper, i could then tell the spammers what i think of their spam…

  4. i have koodo, some stupid canadian phone company which gets you with the no system access fee and i have 50 outgoing texts and its soo annoying b/c texting is so convenient but i dont think 5 bucks extra for unlimited is so amazing since i wont be texting 12000 times a month

  5. I used to text a lot. Probably an average of 3000 a month, until the beginning of this month in which I let my plan expire. Too much time and valuable ZZZ’s are spent on texting, so I’ve gone the opposite and quit it cold turkey. 😉

  6. I don’t text all that often. The keys on the phone are too small to text long conversations. I guess I’m too old for all of this technology. For those of you who text regularly, please don’t text while you’re driving! Did you see the movie Seven Pounds with Will Smith? The guy accidentally killed 7 people because he was text messaging while driving and he committed himself to saving 7 other lives.

  7. We dont have texting in Japan, just regular email on phones. I dont do email or browse the web on my phone. Now that the iPhone is free here I might get one and then maybe I’ll think about email.

  8. Its hard to tell how many I send now because I use BlackBerry Messanger a lot too, which is basically a text. I used to send between 2,000-3,000 a month though

  9. I despise texting and it seems like more and more people are texting me. I don’t have it on my plan and I don’t want to be texted. To me, it seems extremely rude to text someone without asking them first as some people don’t have it on their plan.

  10. I have 6,000 incoming and about 4,000 outgoing a month. That is because I am logged onto Gmail Chat and AIM (each sent considered an sms message) at all times in addition to all the tweets I get. Plus I can text my bf while at work and vice versa throughout the day.

  11. 14,000 test messages in one month? Wow!!! That’s a lot!!

I text a lot too. I find that it is a time saving way of communication. Instead of having to call your sister to tell her that Aunt Leah had a baby and end up having to schmooze with her for an hour about nothing, You just text her the news and she texts back a Mazal Tov. So you just sent one text message and you neded up saving 59 minutes.

    What a great invention!!

  12. I use text a lot. I find it saves time and patience (see #15), on my part. Also good before my plan’s unlimited minutes begin at 6pm.

  13. my god…and i thought 800 a month was a lot (my friend, not me…)dont you people have anything better to do with your time than send 14000 texts a month??!!
btw you should totally do a show in detroit…you might get banned, though. the rabbis would kick you out in a second…

  14. I can’t say I am proud of it, but I have unlimited minutes and texting, and use ’em both a LOT. My record for both was in the same month-was 9000 minutes and 8000 texts (sent/received combined)
Texting is awful, but it’s too useful to let myself think about the downside.

  15. Something different – that puts you into the normal category and based on your linked blob I now know you are a very tpical bais yaakov girl

  16. In AU, they charge .25 cents per txt message. However, they also charge about $1 + per minute to ring another mobile phone. Therefore, it is cheaper to text. I probably send about 50-75 per month and get a few more than that in return.

In the states, we have Verizon for our provider. As with Hesh’s plan, we pay an extra $5 for unlimited text between other Verizon users. Otherwise you can send /receive 50 under the plan.

The standard 50 certainly was not enough when my daughter, Chelle, was in high school. She could put her hand under her coat during a film or a lecture and text me all day. Of course, I would be either busy or catching a quick nap.

    Example of a real conversation:
C – “This history class is a wank”
L – “Tough. Pass it and it will become history.”
    C – “Yea, I know.”
L – “I’m trying to take a nap. NO MORE TEXTING.”
    C – “Oh, sorry”
L – “Chelle. One more text and I’ll shove that phone up your a** when I pick you up!”
    C – “I said I was sorry, Mama.”
C – “I did not mean that 2 come out sassy.”
    C – “Sry”
    C – “Mama, I said I was sorry. Did U get that?”
    L – “I was busy looking for some K-Y!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

    Silence.

And there goes nearly half of my free texts. I’m a Jewish mother. It’s all about the FREE.

On the other hand, as I was a single parent of a teenager, it was nice, although I knew she was responsible. If she went out with her friends she would text me when she arrived at the mall/bowling alley, when she left, if she changed plans, where they were headed next, and when they left to come home. Not many kids will do this but it was nice to know she was safe. She also required this of me as she would worry if I was not in her sight.
Y’all know how only children can be.

  17. Speaking of mothers – Yea, mine is the same. I have showed her, all her grandchildren have showed her and even my brother-in-law, who is as patient as I am has showed her. Nada.

We have diagnosed it is learned helplessness. My mother may be 76 years old but she can work the Sunday NYT crossword in nothing flat. She can do all that but she can’t even listen to her voice mail or find a text that someone has sent. Sounds like it is universal with our parents.

  18. Business Maven I agree with texting for reasons as you described. Great time saver.

We just had a rash of babies born in our Yeshiva shul in AU. I got a text message and photo from each of the fathers – the same ‘gang text’ that everyone got. And I am sure we all sent back “Mazel Tov”

Can you imagine what it was like in the old days for the father to have to stand at a pay phone to make the 50 obligatory calls to relatives and describe the baby in detail in each call?

  19. Used golf clubs are preferred by golfers who do not play much golf, and also those who
are on a budget. Hotels use green certification,
either individually or as a group, to promote their services.
Wit this versatility, they can be used almost anywhere
    on the golf course.
