Why can’t there be a database of halacha, chumra and heterim?

The title says it all, I am sick of people telling me some leniency or chumra and then saying that they heard it from some random sephardic Rabbi in Forest Hills. Or maybe when you have a heter to shower during the 9 days you can’t seem to find out who gave you this heter. How many times I have heard the line “they say” or “I heard from someone” or “I am telling you I read that” and you cannot find where “that” is. Look at the non-Jewish world, you can find anything you want about politicians, musicians, artists, businessmen, etc… yet when you want to find how on earth the Triangle-K got its reputation as being unreliable you will have 10 different people telling you something else. Just go and find out if its actually against halacha to think that that the Rebbe is moshiach- no one source can be had. I propose that there be a one stop shop online database- of heterim, chumros, takanahs, kasharus myths and so on- it will get violent, but Judaism was never made to be one size fits all, there are varrying opinions and I just wish there was one place to learn about them all.

  1. Well really I am referring to it in general- but yes Queens is the main branch.

As a general rule chofetz chaim yeshivas are the bottom rung of the yeshiva food chain.

  2. You can’t chop and choose. For instance, if you hold by the Rambam when it comes to kulos you have to be consistent and follow his chumras as well. Otherwise you’re just a dodgy assed Jew who is really doing what you want and slapping a name on it rather than what G-d expects of you.

  3. when are you going to have an entire post about YU/Stern?????????????????????????????????????????????????????when are you going to have an entire post about YU/Stern?????????????????????????????????????????????????????when are you going to have an entire post about YU/Stern?????????????????????????????????????????????????????when are you going to have an entire post about YU/Stern?????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  4. You are dead wrong about the difficulty getting a Heter. You just need to know which Rabbi to ask.

However, if you’re a divorcee, do not consult any Rabbi in Queens about uncovering your hair. But, if you want a Heter for birth control, the Rabbis in Queens are your best bet.

  5. We learn halacha from our rabbonim. You would only follow somebody else’s heterim if they go by the same rav and source texts. Like someone that always goes by Reb Moshe or always by the Chofetz Chaim or always goes by the Alter Rebbe.

Regarding things that there’s no disagreement among Rabbonim on – you can bet it’s the halacha. Outside of Lubavitch you will not find one legitimate Rav that says the Rebbe can be moshiach. this belief is nonsense. I also firmly believe that the Rebbe agrees that this is the halacha.

This is coming from a Lubavitcher by the way. The mishichisten are just incorrect.

  6. sometimes if you look through the hirhurim blog long enough u can find the heter you’re looking for and a source to back it up

  7. I second the cheers for hihurim. They give great citations. When I’m looking for stuff, if I don’t use dogpile, I find google’s blog search to be quite useful. Nice video, btw. I like the way it really went places and bounced like Tigger.

  8. Did you buy the rights to the website yet? Hetairim.com? Speaking of hashgacha it’s a very political business and everyone has different opinions about that is and is not “kosher”. You raise some very good point though…

  9. You might have better luck starting a wiki (like the slang) for people to submit their minhagim (with slots for country, flavor, etc.). Then add sections for the other desired categories.

  10. If you Google, particularly in Hebrew, it’s almost all out there at your fingertips. If you remember a quote from a gemarah you learned 20 years ago, or a pasuk, or even a quote from Igros Moshe, Google it and it will instantly appear. Amazing and it’s out there. That’s what Googlin is all about

  11. Tofurkey is da bomb- head over to your local Weggies and check it out. Or even better get a ride on out to Lorries- its on East Henrietta road- thay have all sorts of goodies.

  12. One guy told me that Rebbe never died. The sotan clouded people’s vision and they thought they saw that he died but he never did. This clears up all the confusion of moshiach coming from dead. He’s alive and lives in 770.

  13. “Or maybe when you have a heter to shower during the 9 days you can’t seem to find out who gave you this heter.”

you need a heter for this? personal hygiene trumps heter.

    MOSHE:

also no kol isha for zemirot or other situations when the shekhina is present

  14. So Ari when will personal well being trump halacha. We need to figure out a way to make wasting seed legal- so many people would be much better off.
