What is the next fad in frumy food fare?
I remember when cold poached salmon with a side of dill sauce in a carved out piece of cucumber was all the rage. You could be sure if you sat down at any sort of event that this dish would be served first.
Then it became Broccoli salad with crasins and little ramen noodles. All of the sudden every shalom zachor smorgasbord and yeshiva dinner had it, the soggy bodek broccoli drowned in mayo with little red berries popping out from under the artery clogging sauce.
Next it was the power washed lettuce with Mangos and Strawberries, then of course they banned strawberries and it was changed to mandarin orange and lettuce salad.
Then it became sushi, sushi has been around long enough for it to have become a staple in frummy society, you cannot even walk into a pizza store anymore without encountering a Mexican who everyone thinks is Asian, rolling overpriced sushi.
Around the same time that sushi became popular, frummies discovered something called the salad bar, it was a discovery unlike any other, because it wasn’t the real salad bar. The kind that you got a plate and loaded up on everything. No, the frummy salad bar was behind a piece of plexiglass and some guy told you your could have 3 toppings, all for the grand old price of $6, and each individual topping would 50 cents extra. Making a salad that could be made in three minutes at home at a cost of $1 into a high priced chic item that young married girls from the five towns and Flatbush would buy with their sushi.
But that is all, there are no other fads to speak of, or are there? What will be next, maybe fleishig sushi, that would be cool, besides for the whole salmonella thing. Maybe we will start seeing road side kosher ice cream stands with classic cars in front of Wednesday nights or something, with lines of fat people waiting to add some waistline. How about franchised kosher restaurants appearing in college campuses and airports? Who knows? Do you?

Hesh, the “slad bar” that you describe has been around for years, just not in kosher establishment (you should get out more) LOL.
I think the next fad will be vegetarianism since there will be a shortgage of (supposedly) glatt kosher meat when the Agri guys go to jail.
sorry for the typos.
Left Brooklyn you obviously don’t understand my humor based on that comment.
whatever has been the fad in the rest of the world for the past couple of years and is now going out of style, will become the next fad in the frum world.
What’s a “crasin”? Is this some ethic food I’ve never encountered before? Here I am considering myself all worldly and I get confounded by a crasin…
chris, perhaps the misspelling confused you. CRAISIN. It’s a dried sweetened cranberry. It’s a trademarked name.
This was actually funny. More posts like this, please.
Kosher Subways chain would be nice, its almost like the sushi salad bars.
Is there a trendy kosher smoked ribs place like KC masterpiece?
Maybe kosher pizza, no that probably wouldn’t work since its too Italian and Jews like to eat healthy food.
Hesh, I do get your humor, that’s why I read your stuff. Do you get mine?
BTw, if they stick with eating meat, about deep fried kishke? Or kishke tempura? Should be a hit with the chulent crowd.
Actually Trademarked coffee, and other variations of coffee is big (Ice coffee does not count as real coffee).
Used to be you made you’re own coffee, or you got one from your local grocery that had an annoying machine with “exact change only”. Now more people are buying Starbucks (soy milk, please. More the cholov yisroel people), Dunkin Donuts, Chock Full O’ Nuts, Cafe K…
The longer the name, the better it is.
How about kosher Chipotle? Substitute veal for the pork?
Kosher Dinosaur Ribs? (That’s a non-kosher BBQ place near the uptown Fairway). Wait, we don’t believe in dinosaurs, nm.
tesyaa,
I figured it was Hesh’s fat fingers… Guess that brand happened after I left the US.
You Americans seriously need to find something to do besides eat.
I’ve had the idea for a kosher British style pub with fish & chips and a large specialty beer selection, etc. Can’t see it really being a big hit with the frummies though.
sporadic intelligence is onto something with the coffee…All the hot chanie types I see lately comes accessorized with a Starbucks cup in hand.
C. Siegel – we actually drink way too much, but then again look at our presidential candidates (and their running mates).
I can totally see the frummy single sex bar becoming the rage. I can just see the billboards now.
“Now you don’t have to wait till shabbos for the kiddush club” No woman allowed.
It takes a few years for the frummies to catch on to food trends in NY. I think the next trend will be salads. Chinese chicken salad, grilled chicken salad etc.. I was at a restaurant here in L.A. and some NY’ers were looking at the Menu and could not figure out what a grilled salmon salad was, the waiter had to explain to them that it is a green salad with a pieces of grilled salmon mixed in.
All you can eat buffets and salad bars never worked with the frum crowd, seems the really big eaters would take advantage just to see if they could get their money’s worth. With the price of kosher food and prewashed veggies, I could see how someone can “scoff” up $50 worth of salad.
The shul where our small minyan is has a kiddush club for members of the main minyan. Funny thing is that they allow women, but all the members seem to be over 70 years old. I never knew any 70+ year old women that could knock back the single malt with the “boys” until then.
An exclusive singles kiddush club be trendy as well as politically correct. It may also help alleviate the so called shidduch crisis.
Another thing I realy wish gets trendy are the Jewish taverns they used to have in “the good old days”. Read any stories of the Baal Shem Tov and you’re bound to come across the “Jewish Bar Man that got oppressed by the Poretz” theme. Jewish taverns could offer a “kosher” atmosphere, pitchers of imported beer with kosher buffalo wings, etc.
In Sydney, Aus., they used to have a kosher fish and chips joint just off the beach …
Good music, cool people (lots of backpackers and surfers) and excellent greasy food. Best when washed down with a smoke.
I don’t think it’d work in Brooklyn though.
In St. Louis, we don’t have a steady supply of kosher sushi yet. Unless you fall into my camp of kosher, which is milk and parve out, you have to wait until they have a special day at Kohn’s Deli.
Jeez, even the word sushi makes my mouth water for it.
how do you eat non-kosher sushi out, when they cut all of the sushi on the same board, where they use the real king crab and other non-kosher fish?
I mean cake and pasta dishes i kinda understand the rationalazation, put if you ever went to any sushi bar, its not as if they wash the board and the mold-thingy after every roll they make.
I don’t see the big deal since all the fish swam together in the manhatten harbor. Even the chef who touches it – his fingers are not kosher– so why not let a squids intestine touch it too.
Speaking of seafood, is penguin kosher I wonder?
Izzy,
Intrisically, a penguin is vey probably kosher. The telltale signs of (rabinic) non kosher birds are not present in a penguin, but to be sure you would need to check for the following 3 signs:
1) It has to have an extra claw.
2) a crop (part of stomach).
3) A craw (stomach muscle) that is removable by hand.
Let me know when you return from the South Pole, maybe bring a couple back for a nice BBQ.
I love “marooned’s” idea. In the old days, we used to go to Mickey Mantles on CPW, buy a drink or two and wish we could eat. The crowd was upscale. Even saw Mickey once although I’m not a sports nut so I didn’t care.
“Left Brooklyn”–Oh bitch, bitch, bitch. Compared to our slate of candidates, America’s might as well be Abraham Lincoln vs. Harry Truman. (Although I really had to think before coming up with a legendarily good Democrat. You guys were doing much better with the Whigs.)
By the way, I think we Israelis would do well to drink more. We’d be less “atzbani”.
pretty sure that Prime Grill has a meat sushi roll. but fake- probably corned beef or pastrami inside (real jewish sushi)
“I’ve had the idea for a kosher British style pub with fish & chips and a large specialty beer selection, etc. Can’t see it really being a big hit with the frummies though.”
i assume you are not familiar with the bermuda/barmuda fiasco in flatbush?
LOZ: Uh, no offense, but I kind of ignore news out of Flatbush (and Brooklyn in general). It’s never been my favorite place. What was the barmuda fiasco?
“Barmuda” was supposed to be a bar and restaurant. But the bar part was too controversial to get a hashgacha, so it became plain “Bermuda” (just a restaurant).
*Sigh*
It is reasons like that which lead me to my conclusion that my pub idea wouldn’t fly.
My entrepenurial dream shall never be.
Why would a bar be controversial? Have one end for men and another for women 🙂
Or is it k’derech hagoyim??
Am I glad I left Brooklyn.
@Izzy do people actually eat penguins? i can’t imagine it.
So is sushi not specifically seafood?
I’d guess that “authentic” Mexican will be the next big trend. Maybe there will be a trend that’s involves the opening of a “Kosher by Design” restuarant, where you can eat meals from the cookbook series during the week-not just on Shabbos. Of course, Artscroll will have to carfully pick at least 4 hechshers so that everyone will eat there. 🙂
Neil, great idea. There should be two, one meat and one dairy.
to: shua
If it was in a kosher section at the store, I know 1 person who would eat it. He has long sideburns and a handsome tushie. (me)
shua, penguins are what babies cut open and climb into on the Hoth planet because Tauntauns (sp?) are big enough for a minyan.
izzy, you’re hilarious. thank you. 🙂
I have seen (morningstar) bacon and breakfast patties (fake pig) which is veggie and I think its kosher too. I have seen soup with fake crab colored fish (tabachinek). But what I never see is fake textured look alike veggie or kosher shrimp. That my friend is the next kosher million to be made. Serve it on a penguin platter and you could be a double-millionare.
Neil Harris,
“Mexican” food in the US is more properly known as Tex-Mex. I wonder if it’d be better as a meat or dairy place.
Izzy,
They served fake shrimp and crab at my son’s bar mitzva last weekend. As a sport fisherman, I usually stay away from tasting bait, but I dared myseld after I had a few drinks. I have never tasted anything that bad as far as fish goes up until that moment. A few non kosher people in the crowd told me that it tasted nothing like the real thing.
Still waiting on you South pole trip for some penguin burgers, summer’s on the way down there, seems like your only chance at catching some.
I think if Palin wins we all will be eating whale burgers with a side of penguin hotdogs
Where can I buy kosher dog food, preferably steak flavor. Alot of people in my neighborhood eat dogfood cause its cheap and certain brands are tasty. Actually the yummy ones aren’t az cheap though. Still I am dying to try some but I am very very orthodox and only eat things with a hechxkcher.
I am so sick and tired of bagels and matzo balls all the time.
Its promising that they have kosher shrimp that tastes revolting at bar mitzvahs.
******What about sword fish.
+++++What about kosher bacon wrapped filet minon.
#####What about kosher pork n beans.
$$$$$Where can a Jewgger get some kosher oyster twinkies and snowballs
>>>>>Hook me up !
>>>>>Kosher pork rinds!
Oh G-d kosher Chipotle would be my downfall…
New tenants of a new shopping center were invited to a lunch with the developer.
Drinks were ordered but my father, one of them, declined. Another suggested my father have a beer — he again declined.
Yet another asked him why it was that Jews didn’t drink beer.
He replied, if Jews drank beer, it would be $5 dollars a bottle and would be very hard to get.
