Back when our ancestors were in tribal formation in the desert there was one tribe, the Skverers, who were more frum than the others. Hashem saw how frum the tribe of Skver was and to what extent exposure to the other tribes’ lower standards of frumkeit bothered them, so he provided them with a special set of clouds to separate them from the big cloud surrounding everyone else, it was an ezras nashim of sorts. And ever since then New Square has been set apart; there’s a medrash that says that they even have a separate place in olam habah, they don’t interact with anyone else up there; and since Hashem is involved with the rest of the Jewish population, they don’t get to see him either.

I am a satmarer and hashem likes us better than skver. This whole thing is not true.
They can’t hear themselves. The hyperbole about their rebbe’s sacrifice is ridiculous (he may have devoted his life to his cause, but he didn’t “give his life” for it), and the emphasis on keeping New Square isolated so they can continue to live in the way their Great Leader dictated screams “cult.” The worst part is where, without a trace of self-awareness, they insult every other Jewish group by saying that associating with non-Skverers will expose their children to the impurity of these other benighted Jews.
It is absolutely a cult. This is what cults have done throughout history. They separate themselves from the real world so the people cannot see what a real life is like. The Mormons did the same thing.
If that disgusting animal of a rabbi had given his life for their cause it would have been no great loss.
guy in my shul just moved there. he got this letter but ignored it.
Truth is – couldn’t this be equivalent to the outrage by longtime Ramapo residents over hyper-development, marring the tranquility that they moved here for all those years ago?
I think it is the equivalent, and just like you’d say that those Ramapo residents are against hyper-development you’d have to say that these Skverers are anti-Jews.
Well think of it from the other side: would you want to hang out with them?
Why is it that the Jews of today seem to be saying the exact opposite of our forefathers? Abraham had his tent pitched at crossroads with four entrances to welcome every traveller from every direction.
New Square’s radical behavior does not reflect mainstream Judaism.
Their interpretation of Judaism is as valid as YUs insertion of secular studies as a Jewish value, and as valid as Lakewood’s invention of sitting in kollel as a Jewish value, and as valid as the Mizrachi idea of serving in the IDF as a Jewish value and as valid as the Reform overarching philosophy of Tikun Olam.
No, it’s really not. And neither is Lubavitch’s interpretation valid.
What’s not? Lakewood, YU, Mizrachi, Conservative, Reform, Vizhnitz, Satmar? None of them?
